As someone whose dad has always shown up for me no matter what, that part hit especially hard. In the weeks leading up to my trip, the concierge team helped coordinate restaurant reservations and a shopping appointment at a highly coveted luxury boutique, making the planning process feel effortless.

I had also reached out to inquire about bringing my dog. Their response was accommodating from the start, but nothing prepared me for what awaited us upon arrival.

When we entered the room, it had already been prepared specifically for him. There were food and water bowls, a bed, treats, and even a framed photograph of my dog waiting in the room. It was one of those details that caught me completely off guard not because it was extravagant, but because it was thoughtful.

Beyond the service, I loved the hotel itself. As one of Paris's Palace hotels, Shangri-La has all the elegance you'd expect, but it never felt overly formal. The historic building, grand staircases, and beautiful common areas create a sense of luxury without feeling pretentious, which made it easy to settle in and enjoy the experience.

Luxury is often associated with marble bathrooms, Michelin-starred restaurants, and spectacular views. Shangri-La certainly offers its share of beautiful surroundings. Yet the moment I remember most had nothing to do with the hotel’s architecture. It was the realization that someone had taken the time to turn a simple request into a genuinely personal welcome.

Years later, that is what I remember most about my stay.
<div arrived, the concierge team helped coordinate restaurant reservations and a shopping appointment, which was especially helpful given everything we had going on that week. With wedding plans already occupying so much of our attention, having those details handled made the trip feel far more seamless and enjoyable.

When we arrived at our room, we were welcomed with balloons and a handwritten note congratulating us on our wedding. It was a simple gesture, but one that made the stay feel personal and celebratory from the very beginning.

The staff throughout our visit were consistently warm and attentive. Everyone we interacted with seemed genuinely interested in making sure our stay was memorable.

Of the three hotels, Park Hyatt was probably the least visually dramatic. The atmosphere felt understated, elegant, and comfortable rather than showy.

It was also the most affordable of the three properties we stayed at, which only reinforced how much I enjoyed the experience. Given its prime location, spacious accommodations, attentive service, and lower price relative to the others, it offered a level of value that was difficult to ignore.

Ironically, despite being the least dramatic of the three, it's also the one I find myself thinking about returning to the most. There was something about the combination of the spacious room, incredible bathroom, attentive service, and unbeatable location that simply worked. Park Hyatt felt like a place I could easily see myself returning to again and again. If I were planning another trip to Paris in the future, it would be very high on my list.

While Park Hyatt may not be the hotel that immediately leaves you in awe when you walk through the lobby, it excels at something equally important: making Paris feel effortless.
<div class="image-gallery-embed" hosted our wedding reception. My family was staying at the hotel, we had invested significantly in our wedding there, and for years, it had been one of those dream hotels I had always wanted to experience. It was also, by a considerable margin, the most expensive hotel of the three, which naturally came with the highest expectations.

And in many ways, it lived up to that dream.

The building itself is in a category of its own. Of the three hotels, the Ritz was by far the most breathtaking. The grand salons, the flowers, the historic details, the sense of occasion, the moment you walk through the doors, everything feels incredibly special. To this day, it remains the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in.

Unfortunately, it was also the hotel where we experienced the most disappointing service issue.

When booking, I intentionally selected a room category above the entry-level option because I knew we would be getting ready there on our wedding day. The room shown online included a seating area, something that was important given how many people would be coming in and out throughout the morning.

When we arrived, it was immediately clear that the room we had been assigned was much smaller than expected and lacked the seating area shown in the category we had booked.

I went to the front desk to ask about it and was assured that I had received the correct room category. I even pulled up the hotel's website and pointed out that the room we had been given looked identical to the lower category. Despite that, I was repeatedly told that everything was correct.

It wasn't until my now-husband joined the conversation that the situation suddenly changed. At that point, the staff member acknowledged that we had, in fact, been assigned the lower room category. By then, however, we were told that moving rooms was not possible until the day after.

The hotel ultimately refunded the difference in price for the night, which I appreciated, but I couldn't help feeling disappointed by how the situation was handled. Given that it was our wedding week, that our reception was taking place at the hotel, and that multiple members of our family were staying there, I had expected a little more attention to detail.

What made it even more surprising was that, of the three hotels I stayed at before, the Ritz was the only one that did not acknowledge the special occasion in any way. Both Shangri-La and Park Hyatt welcomed us with thoughtful touches that made the stay feel personal. At the Ritz, despite it being the hotel where we were actually hosting our reception, there was no note, no small amenity, and no acknowledgment of the occasion waiting in our room.

Despite all of that, it's impossible for me to say I didn't love the Ritz. The hotel is simply extraordinary. My wedding reception there remains one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and the beauty of the property is unlike anything I've encountered elsewhere.

But if Shangri-La impressed me with thoughtful service and Park Hyatt impressed me with consistency, the Ritz reminded me that even the most iconic hotels can sometimes fall short of expectations.

Shells's Substack is a reader-supported publication. Instead of looking at each cabin on its own, I wanted to compare them side by side to see what you're really getting for your money. From the seat and the food to the service and sleep quality, here's how Air France's three main cabins compare.

Subscribe now

Economy:

Let's start at the back of the plane. I've flown Air France's Economy Class several times on long-haul routes, and my experience has been a bit mixed. The seats are fairly comfortable by economy standards, especially compared to some of the airline's competitors, and the in-flight entertainment system is generally good, with a large selection of movies, TV shows, and music. On the other hand, the meals have consistently been disappointing in my experience, and many of the routes I've flown have been completely packed, making the cabin feel even more cramped on longer flights. I've also had a few less-than-great interactions with flight attendants over the years, though service can vary significantly from crew to crew. Overall, it's a decent economy product, but not one that stands out for the food or service.

Premium Economy:

If Economy was perfectly acceptable, Premium Economy was easily the most disappointing cabin I tried. On paper, it sounds like a nice middle ground between Economy and Business Class, but in practice, I struggled to see the value. The fixed armrests make the seats feel surprisingly narrow and cramped, and while the extra legroom and footrest are nice additions, they weren't enough to justify the price. On most of the flights I looked at, Premium Economy cost at least twice as much as Economy, yet the overall experience felt nearly identical. The food was the same, the entertainment was the same, and the service wasn't noticeably different either. By the end of the flight, I couldn't shake the feeling that I would have been better off saving the money and sticking with Economy.

Business:

Unlike Premium Economy, Business Class felt like a meaningful upgrade in almost every way. The cabin was clean, the seats were comfortable, and the extra space made a huge difference on long flights. The standout feature is Air France's new Business Class suite, which is a major improvement over the airline's previous seat. The added privacy and updated design make the experience feel much more premium. While the older seats are still solid and perfectly comfortable, they lack the wow factor of the newer product and feel much more dated by comparison.

Overall, Air France is a very solid way to cross the Atlantic, regardless of which cabin you're flying. While not every part of the experience impressed me, especially Premium Economy, the airline consistently delivers a comfortable and reliable journey. The seats are generally good, the entertainment is excellent, and when you get one of the newer Business Class suites, the experience can be genuinely impressive. Air France isn't my favorite airline, but it's one I'd happily choose again and again. Given the option, I'd take it over many of its competitors without much hesitation.

Thanks for coming along for the journey.

-Shells ✈️

Shells's Substack is a reader-supported publication. But most of what makes this lifestyle possible has nothing to do with being “rich” and everything to do with strategy.

We’re not trying to pretend business-class flights magically cost nothing. We just realized there’s a huge difference between paying smart and paying retail.

We don’t travel this way because we’re reckless with money. If anything, it’s the opposite. Most of our trips are the result of planning, prioritizing, and learning where luxury actually matters. I’ll gladly spend hours finding the right business class redemption while refusing to overpay for things that add no value. That balance, wanting beautiful experiences while still being intentional, is really what this newsletter is about.

What changed everything for us was learning how points actually work beyond the surface level. Not just opening random credit cards, but understanding transfer partners, airline alliances, hotel programs, redemption values, timing, and how to move points strategically instead of impulsively.

Over time, we realized that luxury travel becomes much more realistic when you stop thinking of points as occasional bonuses and start treating them like part of your overall financial strategy.

We’ve experimented with other cards over the years, but the Amex Gold and the Capital One Venture X are the two that have stayed consistently in our rotation. They complement each other well, and more importantly, they fit naturally into the way we already live and spend.

We use the Amex Gold heavily for everyday categories like dining and groceries, which is where a huge portion of our points come from. It’s one of those cards that quietly racks up points faster than people expect when you consistently put normal spending through it.

The Venture X has become one of our favorite travel cards overall. Between the lounge access, travel credits, transfer partners, and overall travel perks, it’s the card that makes the airport and flying experience feel noticeably smoother and more elevated.

Neither card is “magic,” and we’re definitely not the kind of people opening ten new cards a year trying to game the system. We just found a setup that works for us and learned how to maximize it intentionally over time.

Capital One referral link

Amex referral link

The most important part of all of this, and the part people online don’t emphasize enough, is that points only make sense if you’re financially responsible with credit cards. We have never carried a balance on any of our cards, ever. The second you start paying interest, the value of the points disappears quickly.

We also never spend beyond our means just to hit a welcome bonus or minimum spend requirement. If we can’t naturally reach it through normal spending, we skip it. The goal is to make your existing spending work smarter, not to create new spending in the name of “free” travel.

One of the biggest mindset shifts for us was learning to treat credit cards like debit cards, never like borrowed money. We only use them for purchases we were already going to make regardless, groceries, dining, bills, travel, everyday spending, not because the credit is available.

To maximize points, we try to put as much of our spending as possible onto one card instead of scattering purchases across multiple accounts. But the system only works because we stay extremely aware of what’s actually being spent. After almost every transaction, we transfer that same amount from our checking account into a separate account labeled “Bills,” which is what we use to pay off the credit card at the end of the month. (Shoutout to my brother and sister-in-law for teaching us this hack when we were teenagers)

It sounds simple, but it completely changed the way we manage money. It keeps us from overspending, helps us see exactly how much we truly have left to spend, and makes it almost impossible to accidentally fall into debt while still benefiting from the points and perks.

One of the clearest examples of how powerful points can be was our honeymoon. If we had paid cash for the flights alone, the total would have been upwards of $60,000 since every flight was booked in business or first class, which is honestly not something we ever would have spent out of pocket.

Instead, we booked the flights using around 800,000 points and paid roughly $4,500 in taxes and fees. We had been using points for years, but this was our biggest redemption yet, the kind of trip that reminded us why we've been so intentional about earning and saving points in the first place.

Experiences that once felt reserved for celebrities, executives, or people constantly flying internationally suddenly became accessible in a way that still felt financially intentional. Not “free,” and definitely not effortless, but possible.

And because the flights didn’t consume such a huge portion of our budget, we were able to stay at hotels that normally would have felt completely out of reach for us. Instead of compromising on the rest of the trip after booking expensive flights, we had room to fully enjoy the experience once we arrived.

That’s one of the biggest advantages of points that people don’t talk about enough. Sometimes it’s not about traveling for free, it’s about creating room for experiences that would otherwise feel impossible.

My goal isn’t to convince anyone to travel exactly the way we do. It’s simply to share what’s worked for us, the mistakes we’ve made along the way, and the strategies that have allowed us to experience more of the world than we ever thought possible.

We'll get into the specifics soon, transfer partners, redemptions, flight searches, mistakes to avoid, and the strategies we actually use.
